A Makeover of a Lifetime!

The New Lina strikes a pose with Terrence Underwood of Lava Salon

It was a day of fairy tales as Lina Bangero's childhood dream of becoming a real princess finally came true. 

Gelmar Palmes, Lina's younger brother, won the Bingo ng Bayan's $500 Lava Salon Makeover price. Lava Salon offers hair, beauty and fashion makeover, from its posh Newmarket premises. 

Lina is a registered nurse from Iloilo City. She migrated to New Zealand early this year to be able to support her family in the Philippines. She currently works in a Remuera resthome and hopes to take Nursing Registration exams next year. 

Gelmar and Lina share a special bond. It did not come as a surprise when Gelmar offered Lina the opportunity for a makeover. He says, "Lina is a big fan of the America's Next Top Supermodel. She has always been shy and a little reserved, but I know she secretly wishes to be treated like a star!". 

Terrence Underwood, Lava Salon's stylist and New Zealand's very own Dr Hair, and his team of fashion and beauty experts made Lina's dream come true. Their vision and expertise transformed Lina from a shy provincial girl to a confident woman of today. 

Terrence redesigned the classic bob to a short off-the-face shattered and layered look. Two rich red shades were used to highlight her hair, achieving a modern and vibrant style which suits Lina's creamy complexion. 

Kate, the Team's makeup artist and beauty therapist, brightened her eyes with shades of red and electric blue. "The trend this season is to use cheerful colours reminiscent of the 60s look. For her lips, I used a loud shade of red to enhance the dramatic look of her hair and eyes.". 

Jillian Grant, a fashion consultant, helped Lina create her own personal style. She took her to Boudoir, a haven for those who want the latest in fashion wear. "Clothes, shoes and accessories need to work together to make you feel sexy and feminine. For Lina, I have chosen a silk blouse and a polka dot skirt, sweet and yet flirty. A set of white pearl necklace finishes the look." 

Lina's stunning transformation has indeed turned her into a star. 

"I am very lucky Terrence and his team made me feel comfortable and confident at the same time. I'm glad my brother went to the Bingo. I'm definitely going to be there next year!".

Bingo ng Bayan: Truly the people's bingo!

It was the host's accent that gave it away. The event could have been a Lotto television advertisement - a sea of laughing faces, adults who were excited as kids, clapping, jumping, obviously thrilled and totally enjoying themselves. Bingo ng Bayan '08 was a resounding success. It was a day of winners, friendships and dreams fulfilled.

A crowd of about four hundred showed up at St Joseph's school hall in Takapuna to have fun and win fantastic prizes. Over 35 prizes, including $2000 worth of Shiseido products, $500 Lava Salon makeover certificate, Kablon Farm organic food hamper, Wildfire Restaurant dinner for two, Noblejas charter fishing  trips for two and $500 cash prize donated by I-Remit and Filipino Link, made the desirable items' wish list.

It was an afternoon of heart-thumping excitement as people from all walks of life, Asians and Kiwis, from the young to the young at heart, tried their luck at the University of the Philippines Alumni New Zealand's first ever fundraising event.

Reports from the Philippines that a number of students who have passed the university's competitive entrance exams have to drop out of school because of poverty motivated the group to help deserving but underprivileged students of the university. This day of fun becomes a day of giving back, as the group will donate proceeds to the Iskolar ng Bayan scholarship fund.

The success of Bingo ng Bayan inspired the group to hold the event annually.

Pasensya na po at medyo natagalan ang pag post ko ng mga pictures. Naging busy kasi bigla. Sa mga naghintay, ika nga ng kasabihan, "kahit huli man, dumating pa rin!".

Nakakatuwa at maraming bagong dumating. Mga baguhan sa grupo pero matatagal na dito sa Auckland. Nakaka-inspire ang kanilang mga kwento. Nakakatawa ang humour. Pagtimpla lang ng kape may kwento pa:

"Jen (single po sya), how do you take your coffee?"

May mga napulot na aral sa mga veteran na dito. Sabi ni Ate Laura (GM ng Shiseido), wag daw magpapadala sa mga rejections. Kailangang lakasan ang loob at huwag matatakot sa mga pagsubok.

Just got hold of a really old copy of Diario Filipino, dated Nov/Dec 2006. Excerpts below:


Divina Paredes, editor of CIO Magazine and a UP College of Mass Communication alumna, was awarded Hi-Tech Journalist of the Year in Auckland. She moved to New Zealand in 2000. She started as a writer for Fairfax's MIS Magazine and became its editor in 2004. The following year, the magazine was voted as Best Trade and Professional Magazine by Qantas Media Awards. In 2006, she was a Best Business Magazine Editor finalist at the Magazine Publishers Association's Annual Awards.

Para po sa ibang nagbabasa ng blog, kung may maalala pa kayong ibang words, paki text or email na lang po sa kin kung gusto nyong idagdag sa ating list. One day po, baka pwede na tayong mga publish ng Migrants Dictionary :)

A plea to keep this blog alive

A marketing survey found out that, if there were 10 online participants in a blog environment, it would roughly work this way: one starts it up and maintain it, two or three contribute when they feel like it and seven remain passive participants - they browse through the site, read entries that interest them, but are basically inactive until they come across something that is so overwhelming that it triggers an urge to respond.

This blog is over a month old, with less than 10 members and less than a dozen entries. Not entirely ghosttown.com as I've had about 40 people viewing my profile. Therefore, people are looking up the address, reading entries, but just not involving themselves... yet.

Why? I wonder.

One member says it's too complicated to post entries and recommends sticking with yahoo groups. A friend reckons most of the Alumni members are of a different "older" generation and not really that internet savvy. Ouch.

Hmm, what do you think? Is the technology scary? I hope it is. I would like to believe that it is the unfamiliarity of life on the web that intimidates people from sharing their experiences and thoughts. Not their fear of being judged or misunderstood, or worse, their fear of having nothing important to contribute.

For as long as we live, there will always be stories to weave, dreams to catch and poems to shout out to the world.

Not all stories will have happy endings, some dreams will die away and we're likely to hear Eminem's rap than poems of past.

But, as the world continues to evolve and as history books thicken, so does my soul crave the company of like minded travelers.

Welcome aboard.

Marcha dito, marcha doon. The best and most awaited part of the day yung breaktime para kumain ng isang stick ng banana-cue. (Kaka-miss ang banana-cue).

Kayo, anong battalion kayo? O isa kayo sa mga gumimik para ma-exempt sa CMT?

Auckland Address Mania

Nitong huling apat na taon, malaking bahagi ng ekonomiya ang real estate. Ang mga Kiwis kasi ay house-proud, ambisyon yata ng bawat pamilya ang tumira sa sarili nilang tahanan. Marami rin ang mga property investors dito, yung mga bumubili ng rentals as investments. (Hindi ko po area ito, basahin nyo na lang po ang mga payo ni Ka Uro sa kanyang blog).

Sabi ng mga kaibigan kong Kiwis, you can tell a lot about a person by his/her residential address. Hindi ko po alam kung ito ay kuro-kuro lamang or talaga ngang proven facts, pero ito po ang sabi nila tungkol sa mga sikat na residential areas at 'burbs dito sa Auckland:

Remuera - ang mga naninirahan daw dito ay galing sa mga pamilya ng "old rich", ang slang na tawag sa mga residents ay "remers". Yung mga traditional corporates usually ang may mga Remuera address.

Ponsonby - ang pinaka bohemian part of the city daw. Sa isang survey ng NZ Herald, dito raw may pinakamaraming naninirahan na mga homosexual couples. Pero wag ka, isa itong area na biglang nagtaasan ang presyo ng mga bahay. Marami kasing Kiwis ang mahilig sa colonial or historic houses. Saka maraming cafes, bars and boutique shops along main Ponsonby Road.

Parnell - dito raw nakatira ang mga "new rich". Karamihan ng mga advertising and design agencies ay may Parnell address. Gaya ng Ponsonby, maraming cafes, bar and night spots sa main road.

West Auckland - ang tawag sa mga nakatira sa West Auckland ay "Westies", ewan ko kung san nanggaling, sabi ng iba dahil daw sa mga motorbike gangs ng 70s kung kaya't may reputation ang area. Kung Westy ka raw, very likely na you're driving a Holden car, kung lalaki raw, may tattoo at mallet (hairstyle yan na mahaba sa likod, at laging naka-singlet (yan ang tawag sa sando dito). Pero sa palagay ko, false generalization ito, kasi may ibang parts ng West Auckland na may artistic air about them like Titirangi, at marami ring surfer dudes na naninirahan sa area dahil sa lapit ng Piha Beach.

South Auckland - gaya ng West Auckland, may reputation din. Sabi nila mostly mga Maori o Pacific Islanders daw ang residents dito. Medyo di rin maganda ang portrayal ng media, sabi nila mataas raw ang crime rate, maraming domestics (away asawa na mainggay, pwedeng i-report sa pulis) at loitering ng unruly youth. Pero once again, di ako naniniwala na accurate ito. May mga farm lands at lifestyle blocks din sa South Auckland. At marami ring mga industrial parks sa Mt. Wellington and Penrose.

Newmarket - expensive area, katabi ng Parnell. Parang class na shopping district sa city.

Mission Bay - maganda rito dahil may view ng harbour, bihira akong makakita ng advertised property na bahay with lupa, usually mga flats at apartments. Dati raw, parang retirement village ito ng city, pero dahil sa pagtaas ng real estate, lumipat ang mga retirees sa Orewa. Ngayon ata, mostly mga professionals na nagtratrabaho sa CBD ang nakatira dito.

Ang nakakatawa rito ay pag tumitingin ka ng property. Usually ang mga real estate agents, sasabihin sayo ang prestigious area address. Halimbawa, ang bahay sa Meadowbank, sasabihin sayo Remuera area raw, pero hindi naman. Kaya mag ingat po kayo, lalo na kong bago. (Pero dahil mga taga UP naman tayo, di dapat paapekto ng husto sa location di ba?) Ang masasabi ko lang sa mga real estate agents: magpakatotoo ka, bro!

Understanding the Kiwi language

Nung una akong dumating dito, hirap na hirap akong intindihin ang mga Kiwis (slang for New Zealanders). Una sa lahat, kakaiba ang accent nila. Pero once na masanay ka na sa accent (yis!), ang sunod na challenge ay maunawaan ang kanilang colloquial speak. Ang mga Pinoy kasi sanay sa American english. Ang Kiwi english naman ay halu-halong British, Australian at colonial English (UK at iba pang British colonies).

Para sa mga bagong dating, heto po ang ilang words, phrases at expressions na maririnig at (maaring) magagamit ninyo sa pang araw-araw na pakikipag-usap sa mga puti. I will regularly update this list. Kung meron po kayong gustong idagdag, paki add na lang po sa comments section.

Lemonade - hindi po ito lemon juice. Sa atin, ito ay mas sikat sa tawag na Sprite or 7-up.

Mince - ground meat (beef, pork or lamb). Na-try nyo na po ba ang Mince Pie? Favourite ko po ang may cheese. Yum, lalo na ang Ponsonby Pies or eves Pantry.

Roundabout - rotonda, make sure alam nyo ang rules. I failed my full licence test dahil dito. Always give way to your right, at laging mag-iindicate, kahit straight ahead. Pag nahuli po kayo ng pulis, ang fine dito ay $150. Ouch!

Rattle your dags - hurry up, bilisan mo

What do you reckon? - ano sa palagay mo?

Rollies - roll your own tobacco, mas mura kesa sa ciggies (cigarettes), pero wag na lang pong mag smoke, tipid na, hahaba pang buhay mo.

Lollies - candies, ang mga classics dito ay pineapple lumps (na wala namang pinya sa loob, kundi marshmallow na kulay yellow na balot sa milk chocolate), licorice (sa palagay ko, acquired taste ito) at kahit anong Cadbury chocolate products.

Kick the bucket - isa ito sa mga unang phrases na narinig ko, sabi ko sa kausap ko, bakit naman nya ginawa yun, di ba masakit sa paa? Yun pala ang ibig sabihin nito, namatay, nangibang mundo na.

Guy Fawkes - usually first weekend of November, nagpapaputok sila dito, kung bagong salta ka, di ka maiimpress dahil mas bongga ang mga fireworks display sa Manila. Kung gusto po ninyong mag participate sa celebrations, take note sa mga legalities, bawal sa under 14 yr olds, at di pwedeng magpaputok after Guy Fawkes.

Jandals - chinelas

You're a legend - sa tin, kung legend ka, malamang isa kang bayaning patay na, dito ang ibig sabihin, magaling ka! Another fave expression dito ay good-on-ya-mate!

Tea - mahilig sila dito ng tsaa, pero hindi gaya sa tin na iced tea. Dito usually, teabag plus milk. Pag sinabi palang morning tea, ibig sabihin, break or snack sa umaga, usually mga around 10am. Pag afternoon tea, either merienda sa hapon or dinner(supper).

Fizzy drinks - soft drinks

Candy floss - sugar candy

Sauce - tomato sauce (iba pa ang ketchup)

Chips - french fries, sikat dito ang fish n chips, which is battered fish fillet and fries

Ice block - sa tin ito po ang popsicle, fave ko ang fruju orange

Barbie - short cut para sa barbeque, dito pag mag aattend ng BBQ hosted by Kiwis, usually BYO (Bring Your Own), kelangan may sariling meat (sausages or beef/pork steak) at alcoholic drinks

Sausages - maraming klase ng sausages, pero tandaan po na iba ito sa hotdog, at ang pulang sausage dito, ang tawag ay cocktails (hindi hotdog)

Special - "Sale" as in, it was on special, it was a bargain!

Rubbish - Eto, obvious naman di ba? Garbage or basura as in "where's your rubbish bin (basurahan)"? Pero kung may mag comment na, "nonsense, that's rubbish", ibig sabihin walang kwenta or kalokohan lang ang usapan.

Get along like a house on fire - Dahil nasunog ang bahay namin nung bata pa ako, at dahil di uso ang house and contents insurance sa pinanggalingan ko, kahit anong may kinalaman sa sunog, medyo "violent reaction" ako. Kaya't nung di-nescribe ng isang Kiwi dito na ang relationship daw namin ay parang isang bahay na nasusunog, syiempre na offend ako. Kala ko kasi ininsulto ako, mali pala ang interpretation ko! Dito ang ibig sabihin nito, vibes na vibes kayo, "tight" - parang Guy & Pip nung kasikatan nila.

Hard case - mag ingat sa paggamit nito. Kung Kiwi ang kausap, ang ibig sabihin nito ay funny, hilarious, makulit kung baga. Pero kung British ang kausap mo, ibig sabihin nito, mayabang at mahirap pakisamahan.

Bun in the oven/up the duff - buntis, preggy, once again gamitin lamang kung ka-vibes ang kausap, informal talk ito (i.e. Angelina Jolie is rumoured to have a bun in the oven or is Angelina Jolie really up the duff?)

Roll in the hay - Tingnan nga natin ang comprehension skills ninyo: "Angelina Jolie went for a roll in the hay, and is rumoured to be up the duff." So, ano ang ibig sabihin ng roll in the hay?

Sprog - Eto pang isang comprehension skills test, "Angelina Jolie had a roll in the hay, got up the duff and popped out a sprog!" Ewan ko na lang kung di nyo 'to ma-gets!

Katoliko sa ibang bayan

Matagal na 'kong di nagsisimba. Nakalimutan ko na kung kelan ako naging huling totoo sa katolisismo. Naalala ko nung elementary at high school ako, araw-araw kaming pinagdadasal ng rosaryo ng mga madre, at least once a week magkumpisal, at memoryado ang birthdays ng mga santo.

Nung nag UP ako, aba at biglang nagbago ang tingin ko sa mundo. Medyo disappointed nga ang pamilya ko, ba't daw ako naging atheist? Sabi ko, di naman, agnostic lang.

Dito sa NZ, ramdam na ramdam ko ang Dyos sa ating kapaligiran. Luntiang mga burol, asul na kalangitan, government dole-outs, petfood (kung naniniwala ka sa reincarnation, sarap sigurong maging house pet dito sa NZ 'no? Ano kayang reaksyon ng isang askal or pusakal* na taga Tondo kung sakaling mapadpad dito?)... mga bagay na kadalasan ay "taken for granted" ng mga puti. Minsan natatawa nga ako sa mga balita dito. Traffic daw lumalala, pollution daw pinapatay ang kinabukasan ng bansa, mga politicians daw nag overspend ng election budgets... Sana maranasan nilang tumira sa Manila, kahit isang linggo lang.

Pero ano kaya kung ang mga Pilipino manirahan din dito?

Nung linggo, unang beses kung maka-attend ng Filipino mass sa Balmoral. Kakaiba, parang time space warp (ala-Shaider). Kahit pa naka-pang ginaw ang mga tao, para akong nagsimba sa Baclaran. May mga batang nag-iiyakan, mga nagbubulungan (i.e. chismis galore), lakas ng kantahan, punong limos (hindi lang isang beses, apat yata), beso-beso during "peace be with you" at syiempre, di mawawala ang kainan. Ika nga ni Father, "Tayong mga Pinoy, mala-late sa lahat ng bagay, pero di sa busugan."

Alam nyo, kahit pala di ka magsimba ng matagal, di mo malilimutan ang mga ritwal ng misa. Para bang kahapon lang, nag flores de mayo ako. Hindi bigo ang mga magulang ko, na halos every sem, nangungutang para mabayaran ang "exclusive-catholic-school-for-girls" tuition fees ko.

Naliwanagan ako. Hindi pala katolisismo o relihiyon ang bumubuhay sa simbahan. Kundi tayo, mga kaluluwang naghahanap ng kapwa-tao, kaibigan, kakilala o bagong pag-asa.

Luwalhati sa Dyos sa kaitaasan.. at sa mga taong sinasakupan niya.

Nung Byiernes, nanood ako ng concert. Yung kaibigan ko, narinig nya sa radyo, nandito raw ang UP Concert Chorus. Syiempre, natuwa ako. OPM-thirsty yata ako. Saka kahit anong gawin ko, mahirap itago ang pride. Bunga ako ng UP. Hirap, sarap, pighati at ginhawa. Love-hate relationship (lalo na ang Math 11). Parang first love, yung di nakakalimutan, laging inaasam-asam.

Kung akala nyo yan ang kabaduyan na tukoy ko, nagkakamali kayo. Preamble lang po yan.

Kasi nung pumanhik sila sa stage at kinanta ang Lupang Hinirang, para po akong gutom na sanggol. Humagolhol sa tindi ng emosyon.

Alam nyo yung mga commercials nila Regine at Martin para sa Duty Free? Totoo pala yun. Kahit gaano ka tigas ang puso, papatak ang luha. Kahit waterproof ang mascara, bibigay din sa bigat ng damdamin.

Pagpapakilala

Magandang araw po.

Ang blog na ito ay nilikha upang maging tulay ng pagsasamahan ng mga dating mag-aaral ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas na ngayon ay naninirahan na sa New Zealand.

Tayo na't magkwentuhan, magbalik-alala at magmuni-muni tungkol sa ating mahal na Unibersidad, lahi at bayan.

Alaala

Mahirap iiwan ang bansang pinaglakihan. Kahit na gaano na katagal sa bagong piling tirahan, laging may babalikan sa bayang iniwan; mga alaalang minsan ay nakakalimutan dahil sa bilis ng buhay o di kaya'y, di sinasadyang nababalewala, hanggang sa ito'y magkupas at mapalaya ng ihip ng panahon.

Ngunit, may mga alaala na namamalagi sa puso at kaluluwa.

At sa ating paglalakbay, laging may makakakilala at makakaunawa sa daang ating tinahak, sa ating ugat na pinagmulan.
